What Is Costcodle?

Costcodle is a free daily puzzle where you guess the price of a real Costco item. You get the product photo and six guesses. After each one the game tells you whether the real price is higher or lower, and uses colour to show how far off you are.

It launched on September 21, 2023 and has run one puzzle a day since. It's a single-page web game — no app install, no account — built by an independent developer. Costco isn't involved in it.

The difficulty is different from word games. There's no dictionary to narrow things down and no letter feedback. Your signals are the direction arrow and the colour of the result, so progress comes from knowing typical Costco price levels as well as deduction. If you're stuck, the hints above are the fastest way back on track.

How to Play Costcodle

  1. One Costco item a day, and it's shown with its name and photo the moment you open the page. You are not guessing what the item is. You are guessing what it costs.
  2. Type a price as a dollar amount, e.g. 14.99.
  3. Every guess comes back with two things: an arrow, telling you the real price is higher or lower, and a colour telling you how far off you are.
    • red — more than 25% away
    • yellow — inside 25% but not close enough
    • green — inside 5%, which wins the round
The exact percentage is never shown during play.
  4. You get six guesses.
  5. Guess within 5% of the real price and you win.
  6. Streaks and stats are stored in your browser, so there's nothing to sign up for and no app to install.

Costcodle Strategy: Five Things That Actually Help

  1. Read the arrow for direction and the colour for distance. This is the part most players miss. A red comes back not because you were wrong about the direction but because you were in the wrong price band altogether — the next guess should move a whole tier, not a few cents. A yellow means you're already inside 25%, so from there you converge in small steps and stop rethinking the category.
  2. Identify the department before you spend guesses. Costco pricing clusters tightly by department, so two guesses inside the right band beat six guesses spread across the whole catalogue.
  3. Expect the bulk penalty. Costco packages run larger than a supermarket's, so the sticker price sits above what the same product costs elsewhere. Guessing grocery-store prices costs you guesses.
  4. Don't burn a guess on a round number. $10.00 tells you very little you didn't already know; a guess near the edge of the plausible range splits the space better.
  5. Work out whether the item is food before you anchor anything. The catalogue is not all groceries — sofas, patio sets, large televisions and appliances all appear. Sizing up what the item is tells you which order of magnitude to start in, and that single decision is worth more than any amount of refining on the wrong band.

A Costcodle solver can help with arithmetic, but choosing the right starting price band matters more.

Costco Price Ranges Worth Memorizing

Set your first guess from the department, not from the last answer. These bands are computed from all 1,124 puzzles published since September 2023 and grouped by item type.

Item typeTypical rangeNotes
Produce and fresh$4.99–$13.99
Dairy and eggs$4.99–$15.84priced low across the boardpriced low across the board
Snacks and pantry$4.99–$19.19varies by package sizevaries by package size
Meat and seafood$5.99–$21.49
Household and paper goods$14.79–$31.99
Furniture, appliances, electronics$26.79–$1,659.99a wide range, so check the item sizea wide range, so check the item size

One caveat worth reading twice: the same "one Costco item" spans roughly $0.99 to $1,799.99 across the puzzles we've checked — a patio set and a bag of chips are both fair game. If the photo looks like furniture or a large appliance, ignore every food-based instinct you have and anchor high.

Recalculated when new puzzles are recorded from the game's own published data. The ranges show the 10th to 90th percentile of items classified by name.

Why Costco Prices Are Hard to Guess

Two things work against you. Package sizes are bigger, so prices sit higher than the same item at a supermarket and your grocery-store instinct undershoots. And the spread across departments is enormous — a bag of chips and a blender are both "one Costco item," and their prices have nothing in common. Most misses come from carrying an assumption in from the wrong aisle.
